'Disenchanted' Is Writing (and Reading) the Book on Twisted Fairy Tales
By Jamie LernerNov. 17 2022, Published 1:23 p.m. ET
It has been over a decade since we were ready to dive into the arena of Disney’s Giselle (Amy Adams), a princess compelled into truth in Disney’s Enchanted. Sometimes, we all wish to be princesses, however we’re all forced to be actually. However, even in truth, Giselle unearths her “luckily ever after”... or does she? Now that Disenchanted is here, we’re all reckoning with what it way to be “happily ever after.”
The sequel movie follows Giselle on a adventure as she and Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey) move out of the town and into the geographical region. It presentations us what occurs after the fateful “happily ever after,” much like the musical, Into the Woods, although we doubt Disenchanted is as darkish. While Disenchanted’s predecessor wasn't directly based on a book, it has spurned its personal literature. So, is Disenchanted based on a book?
‘Disenchanted’ has a large choice of source subject material, even if it’s indirectly based on a book.
Like Enchanted, there’s plenty of Disney canon out there to encourage Disenchanted. The first film wasn't based on a book (unlike the continuously complicated equivalent title, Ella Enchanted), although it was based on several repeatedly known fairy tales. It’s clear that Giselle is an amalgamation of every Disney princess, however mostly of Snow White, Belle, and Cinderella.
We be expecting that Disenchanted’s Giselle will proceed to be inspired by way of the unique Disney princesses, however in all probability a extra downtrodden model of them.

There are many stories and novels that have their own twisted takes on classic stories, such as the aforementioned Into the Woods, as well as Gregory Maguire’s Wicked and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. (It turns out like twisted fairytales make for excellent musicals!) While Disenchanted isn’t based on just one tale, we’re positive that it'll employ ways impressed by many of these “twisted stories,” despite the fact that meanwhile keeping in tone with its Disney heritage.
In truth, despite the fact that Enchanted wasn’t to begin with based on a book, there was a book written that was once based on the movie! Adapted by Jasmine Jones from the Bill Kelly screenplay, the 155-page book (geared towards more youthful readers) brings the display to the page with first rate evaluations. So even if there isn’t a Disenchanted book but… there’s always room on the shelf for a new form of adaptation.
Disenchanted drops on Disney Plus on Nov. 18.
