If you haven’t noticed Marriage Story but, we suggest you fix that as quickly as possible. It’s a glorious, achingly stunning movie that undoubtedly merits a watch (and perhaps some awards, too). Warning: It will more than likely make you cry no less than four times...but it may additionally make you oddly happy. Especially on the end. Here’s the Marriage Story ending explained. There shall be spoilers.

What is Marriage Story about?

Written and directed by way of Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story is a portrait of the marriage between Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlett Johansson). The film opens with each of them talking about what they love most about one any other. We pay attention Charlie talk about how he loves Nicole’s infectious giggle, that she provides the most productive items, and that she all the time knows when to push him.

We pay attention Nicole say that Charlie is a nice dad to their son Henry, that he’s a nice wardrobe, and that he hardly gets defeated. Everything is gorgeous and cute and happy.

After that heartwarming intro, although, the audience gets a surprise to the machine: Charlie and Nicole are keeping apart, and those lists were simply an assignment from a therapist — he wanted them to write down what they love about every other in an effort to make their separation and eventual divorce much less worrying. Nicole refuses to proportion her listing with Charlie and storms out of the remedy appointment.

The rest of the movie chronicles Charlie and Nicole’s separation and divorce and it does now not let up for even a second. While there are lots of laugh-out-loud hilarious moments within the movie (like when Nicole’s sister — performed via Merritt Wever — talks awkwardly about a pie she’s preserving), they're right away followed by way of moments that suck the air out of the room (like when Nicole’s sister places down the pie to formally serve Charlie divorce papers).

Watching Charlie and Nicole have interaction throughout the film would possibly make you start to wish that the two of them will reconcile — there’s obviously still a lot of affection there. But as the tale progresses and the divorce lawsuits get nasty, it becomes crystal clear: Marriage Story is the tale of a marriage at its end. But that doesn’t necessarily imply it has an unsatisfied ending.

Here’s the Marriage Story ending explained:

Near the top of the film, we see Nicole and Charlie carry out separate renditions of songs from the musical Company. In Nicole’s case, the track is “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” — she sings it along with her mom and sister, and it’s unimaginable not to interpret one of the crucial lyrics as digs at Charlie (“You’re a transferring / Deeply maladjusted / Never to be relied on / Crazy individual yourself”).

Then we see Charlie sing “Being Alive.” As he pleads for “Someone to carry [him] too close / Someone to hurt [him] too deep,” you’ll most definitely find yourself crying (and being very impressed by means of Adam Driver’s making a song chops). If that were the end of the film, things would feel beautiful sad and miserable. But it’s now not.

We get two epilogue-like scenes at the end of the film that depart us with hope — if not of reconciliation, then a minimum of of transferring ahead with attention and with echoes of the love that to start with drew Charlie and Nicole in combination.

Charlie involves Nicole’s house and meets her new boyfriend. It’s uncomfortable and awkward, but now not malicious by any means. He then stumbles upon Henry studying aloud from Nicole’s listing of things she loves about Charlie — the only she refused to percentage with him when the 2 began the method of separation. Charlie chokes back tears as he reads Nicole’s phrases (and so does the target market, in fact). Charlie also tells Nicole that he’s shifting to LA for a yr to be nearer to Henry.

Then the whole new family (Nicole’s new boyfriend incorporated) pass trick-or-treating in combination. At the end of the evening, Nicole tells Charlie to take Henry for the night (despite the fact that it’s her night to have him). He thanks her, choices up their son, and begins walking away. Nicole calls out to Charlie to attend, then bends down and ties his shoe for him.

It’s a easy gesture, but it manner such a lot. Both Charlie and Nicole were in a position to set aside the nastiness of the divorce — the big-shot attorneys, the catty manipulation, the heartbreaking arguments — and are actually willing to move ahead into a long run that prioritizes Henry’s wishes and makes an attempt to stay the peace. The Marriage Story ending is probably not a conventional happily-ever-after ending, but it’s a happy ending all the same.

Marriage Story is now available to circulate on Netflix.
